What is rhinoplasty and what does the procedure involve?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or reconstructing the nose for cosmetic or functional purposes. Cosmetic rhinoplasty enhances the nose’s appearance by improving symmetry, refining proportions, or adjusting the size to better complement the face. Functional rhinoplasty addresses breathing difficulties caused by structural issues like a deviated septum. The surgery involves modifying the bone, cartilage, and soft tissues of the nose and can be performed using either an open approach with an external incision or a closed approach with incisions hidden inside the nostrils.

Recovery from rhinoplasty varies by individual but generally includes initial swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose, which typically peak within the first few days. A nasal splint is usually applied for about a week to support the new shape, and most people can return to work or school within one to two weeks. Activities should be limited to avoid strenuous movements and protect the nose from accidental bumps. Full healing and final results may take up to a year as tissues settle and any residual swelling diminishes. Following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions is crucial for optimal recovery.

While rhinoplasty is generally safe, it carries potential risks such as infection, excessive bleeding, scarring (especially with open rhinoplasty), breathing difficulties if the nasal structure is not properly addressed, and asymmetry that may require revision surgery. There is also the possibility of not achieving the desired aesthetic outcome, leading to dissatisfaction. Choosing a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon significantly reduces these risks. As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to be aware of these potential complications and discuss them thoroughly with your surgeon before proceeding.

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals in good overall health without serious medical conditions that could impair healing. They should have realistic expectations about the surgery’s outcomes and be over the age of 15 for females and over 17 for males to ensure nasal growth has stabilized. Candidates typically seek to improve the shape, size, or function of their nose and are psychologically prepared for the changes the surgery will bring. A thorough consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon is essential to determine if rhinoplasty is appropriate based on individual circumstances and goals.

Rhinoplasty results are generally long-lasting, providing significant improvements in the nose’s appearance and function for many years. However, factors such as natural aging, trauma, or significant weight changes can affect the longevity of the results. Proper care and avoiding activities that could damage the nose help maintain the surgical outcomes. While the results are stable for decades, some individuals may choose to undergo revision surgery to refine or adjust their nose as desired over time.
